After Duchamp, tired replicas of the Duchampian Readymades seemed ubiquitous in galleries (or at least to me) leading us to question if anyone could come up with something that would make Duchamp himself smile. Can’t speak for all but in my opinion, Rirkrit Tiravanija’s work seems to have accomplished just this— he has redefined art, illustrating cultural and social exchange in the most mundane act: eating. Tiravanjia has described his own work as, “comparable to reaching out, removing Marcel Duchamp’s ‘Urinal’ from its pedestal, reinstalling it back on the wwall, and then, in an act of return to its original use, pissing into it”…I think this is probably the best description anyone has given about their work…!
